Eight Metal Surface Treatment Processes, The Last One is the Trend!

The metal surface is easy to rust and corrode in the natural state, which will cause excessive loss of metal products. At the same time, in order to meet the functional requirements of metal products such as brightness, wear resistance, and aesthetics, the coating on the metal surface plays a very important role. Surface treatment can improve product appearance, texture, function and other aspects of performance.

Eight Metal Surface Treatment Processes, The Last One is the Trend!

Surface treatment is to form a surface layer of one or more special properties on the surface of the material by physical or chemical methods. Through surface treatment, the appearance, texture, function and other properties of the product can be improved. General metal surface treatments include: anodizing, electrophoresis, micro-arc oxidation, PVD vacuum plating, electroplating, powder coating, metal wire drawing, alloy catalytic liquid technology, and etc.

Anodizing

It is mainly the anodic oxidation of aluminum, which uses the principle of electrochemistry to form a layer of Al2O3 (aluminum oxide) film on the surface of aluminum and aluminum alloys. This layer of oxide film has special properties such as protection, decoration, insulation and wear resistance.

Technical Features:

  1. Increase the strength.
  2. Realize any color except white.
  3. To achieve nickel-free sealing, to meet the requirements of Europe, the United States and other countries for nickel-free.

Technical difficulties and key points for improvement:

The yield level of anodization is related to the cost of the final product. The key to improving the oxidation yield is the appropriate amount of oxidant, appropriate temperature and current density. This requires structural component manufacturers to continuously explore and seek breakthroughs in the production process.

Electrophoresis

It is used for stainless steel, aluminum alloy, etc., it can make the product show various colors, maintain the metallic luster, and at the same time enhance the surface performance, with good anti-corrosion performance.

Shortcoming:

The ability to cover defects is general, and the electrophoresis of die castings requires higher pretreatment.

Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO)

The process of applying a high voltage in an electrolyte solution (usually a weak alkaline solution) to generate a ceramicized surface film layer, which is the result of the synergistic effect of physical discharge and electrochemical oxidation.

Advantage:

  1. Ceramic texture, dull appearance, no high-gloss products, delicate hand feeling, anti-fingerprint;
  2. Wide range of substrates: Al, Ti, Zn, Zr, Mg, Nb, and their alloys, etc.;
  3. The pretreatment is simple, the product has excellent corrosion resistance and weather resistance, and has good heat dissipation performance.

Shortcoming:

At present, colors are limited, only black and gray are more mature, and bright colors are currently difficult to achieve; the cost is mainly affected by high power consumption, and it is one of the highest costs in surface treatment.

PVD Vacuum Plating

PVD vacuum plating is also known as physical vapor deposition vacuum plating, is an industrial manufacturing process that mainly uses physical processes to deposit thin films.

Technical Features:

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) can coat metal surface with high hard plating, high wear resistance cermet decorative coating

Electroplating

It is a technology that uses electrolysis to attach a layer of metal film to the surface of metal to prevent corrosion, improve wear resistance, electrical conductivity, reflectivity and enhance aesthetics.

Advantage:

  1. The coating has high gloss and high-quality metal appearance;
  2. The base material is SUS, Al, Zn, Mg, etc.; the cost is lower than PVD.

Shortcoming:

Environmental protection is poor, and the risk of environmental pollution is high.

Powder Coating

It is sprayed on the surface of the workpiece with powder spraying equipment (electrostatic spraying machine). Under the action of static electricity, the powder will be uniformly adsorbed on the surface of the workpiece to form a powder coating; the powder coating is subjected to high temperature Bake leveling cures into a final coating with various effects (different kinds of effects for powder coatings).

Advantage:

  1. Rich colors, high gloss and matte optional;
  2. Low cost, suitable for building furniture products and shells of heat sinks, etc.;
  3. High utilization rate, 100% utilization, environmental protection;
  4. Strong ability to cover defects; 5. Can imitate wood grain effect.

Shortcoming:

At present, it is less used in electronic products.

Metal Wire Drawing

It is a surface treatment method that forms lines on the surface of the workpiece by grinding the product, which has a decorative effect. According to the different lines after drawing, it can be divided into: straight line drawing, random pattern drawing, corrugated pattern, swirl pattern.

Technical Features:

The wire drawing treatment can obtain a non-mirror-like metallic luster on the metal surface, and the wire drawing treatment can also eliminate the subtle defects on the metal surface.

Alloy Catalyst Technology

Alloy catalytic liquid is suitable for various metal materials, and can be catalyzed as long as it can flow and soak into the place. The product can be processed by heating to about 83 ℃ at room temperature. During the processing, the metal is generally soaked for about 15-20 minutes. After soaking, wash it with clean water and dry it naturally before use. Simplifying the protection steps of metal surfaces will greatly reduce production costs in terms of equipment.

Technical Features:

Alloy catalyst liquid is a low-cost, easy to operate, clean production of environmental effects. It has the technical characteristics of good deep plating ability and dense coating and low porosity. Alloy catalytic plating is a standard clean production process. The so-called clean production refers to the production process of using non-polluting food raw materials to prepare liquids. It can be plated with a variety of metal materials, such as iron, carbon steel, die steel, alloy steel, copper and copper alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, etc.

How Anti-Static And Protective Films Reduce Surface Damage In Sensitive Manufacturing
In sensitive manufacturing, many costly defects do not begin with machine failure or operator error. They begin with static charge, airborne particles, micro-scratches, adhesive residue, and unnoticed surface contamination. These issues are often underestimated because they appear as scattered defects rather than one major failure. Yet in electronics, optics, display processing, and coated surface production, even small flaws can reduce yield, increase rework, slow inspection, and weaken final product quality.

What Buyers Should Know Before Choosing a Automatic Plastic Blow Molding Machine
For buyers, factory owners, and packaging manufacturers, selecting an automatic blow molding machine is no longer just a matter of comparing output speed or initial price. In real production environments, the performance of a plastic blowing machine is often determined by the quality and coordination of its core components. A machine may appear competitive on paper, yet still create costly problems once production begins. Uneven wall thickness, unstable parison formation, excessive scrap, slow cooling, and difficult maintenance are all issues that can usually be traced back to the design of several key modules. This is why experienced buyers tend to look beyond catalog specifications and focus instead on the machine’s screw, die head, clamping system, and cooling design. These components do more than support production. They directly influence product quality, material efficiency, energy use, maintenance frequency, and overall return on investment.

How High-Efficiency Gear Motors and Brushless Motors Support ESG and Energy Savings
Industrial motor efficiency directly affects a factory’s electricity use, carbon footprint, maintenance burden, and long-term operating cost. For factory owners, procurement teams, and equipment designers, choosing a more efficient gear motor or Brushless Motor is not only a technical upgrade. It is also a practical way to improve ESG performance, reduce energy waste, and strengthen return on investment. In most industrial facilities, motors are among the largest sources of electricity consumption. When motors run continuously in conveyors, packaging lines, automated machinery, food processing systems, and material handling equipment, even a modest improvement in efficiency can produce significant annual savings. That is why motor efficiency is increasingly linked to ESG strategy, cost control, and supply chain competitiveness.

How Material Design Affects Fitness And Rehabilitation Rubber Products
In fitness and rehabilitation products, material design has a direct effect on performance, comfort, durability, hygiene, and long-term user trust. A resistance band that stretches unevenly, a grip that becomes slippery, or a flexible component that tears too early can quickly lead to complaints, returns, and lower confidence in the product. The key challenge is not simply choosing an elastic material. It is selecting and validating a material system that can perform consistently under repeated stretching, skin contact, sweat exposure, and ongoing mechanical stress.

Choosing the Right Coating for Paper Cups and Food Containers
Selecting the right coating for paper cups and food containers affects far more than leak resistance. For foodservice brands, importers, product teams, and packaging decision-makers, coating choice directly shapes heat resistance, grease performance, sealing behavior, disposal options, compliance risk, and overall cost. A paper cup or food container may look similar on the outside, but the coating often determines whether it performs well in real service conditions or creates problems after launch. That is why coating specifications should be defined early rather than treated as a minor detail after size, structure, or artwork are approved.

Understanding Lathe Types: Differences Between Manual, Engine, and CNC
When manufacturers evaluate different lathe types, the decision usually goes beyond machine specifications alone. Choosing between a **manual lathe**, an engine lathe, and a CNC lathe can influence production flexibility, machining consistency, labor requirements, and long-term investment efficiency. For many workshops, factories, and industrial buyers, understanding these differences is essential to selecting equipment that truly fits the job. In metalworking, the wrong machine choice can create avoidable problems. A machine that is too simple may limit output, while a machine that is too advanced may increase cost without delivering enough return. That is why buyers often need a clear, practical comparison rather than a purely technical definition. This article explains the differences between manual, engine, and CNC lathes, where each one performs best, and how buyers can choose the right type based on actual production needs.
