A conductivity sensor is a device used to measure the concentration of dissolved ions or salts in water or other liquids. The sensor has two electrodes—an outer electrode and an inner electrode—that are usually made of conductive materials like platinum or graphite. These electrodes are immersed in the solution being measured, and current is passed through them. This current flows through the solution and encounters resistance. The resistance will vary depending on the concentration of ions (charged particles) in the solution. Solutions with higher concentrations of ions conduct electricity better and will have lower resistance than those with lower ion concentrations.
Electronic circuitry measures the electrical resistance between the electrodes and calculates the electrical conductivity of the solution. This conductivity measurement is typically expressed in units such as Siemens per meter (S/m) or microsiemens per centimeter (µS/cm).
